How to calculate a discount
sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) and savings = price × discount ÷ 100
- A $80 pair of shoes is 25% off. Savings: 80 × 0.25 = $20.
- Sale price: 80 − 20 = $60 (or 80 × 0.75 = $60).
- With 7% sales tax on the sale price: 60 × 0.07 = $4.20, so you pay $64.20.
Stacked discounts don't add up
"20% off, plus an extra 10% off" is not 30% off. It never is. The second discount applies to the price that is already reduced. $100 becomes $80.00. Then it becomes $72.00. That is 28% off in total. The order of the two discounts doesn't change the result.
In most U.S. states, sales tax is charged on the price after a store discount. Manufacturer coupons can work differently by state. If the exact cents matter, check your state revenue department's rules.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.80. 20% off $45 is 45 × 0.80 = $36. You save $9.
Is 20% off and then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. It's 28% off. The price is multiplied by 0.80 and then by 0.90. That leaves 0.72 of the original.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). Say a $60 item was 25% off. It originally cost 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?
After, for a store discount. Sales tax is usually charged on the reduced price. Rules for manufacturer coupons vary by state.
