How to calculate a tip
tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, per person = total ÷ people
- Dinner for two comes to $64. A 20% tip is 64 × 0.20 = $12.80.
- The total is 64 + 12.80 = $76.80.
- Split two ways, each person pays 76.80 ÷ 2 = $38.40.
Quick mental math. For 20%, move the decimal one place and double it ($64 → $6.40 → $12.80). For 15%, take 10% and add half of it ($6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60).

U.S. tipping customs
Tipping is customary in the U.S. It is also voluntary. There's no official rate. At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range. People often go higher for great service or a small check. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, because sales tax isn't part of the service.
Check the bill before you tip. Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity or service charge, often for larger groups. Counter service, delivery, rideshare, hair salons and hotel housekeeping each have their own customs. Pick your rate. The calculator does the rest.
For workers, tips are taxable income. They must be reported (IRS Publication 531, Reporting Tip Income). There is a new rule for tax years 2025 through 2028. Eligible workers in jobs that customarily get tips may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips. The IRS guidance on One, Big, Beautiful Bill provisions explains who qualifies.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10.00, for a total of $60.00. Move the decimal one place ($5). Then double it.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, because sales tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the after-tax total adds only a little. Either is fine.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill. Then divide by the number of people. A $90 bill with an 18% tip is $106.20. For four people, that is $26.55 each.
What is an automatic gratuity?
It is a service charge the restaurant adds to the bill, often for large parties. If it's already on the bill, you don't need to add a full tip on top.
