How age is calculated

Your age is the number of full years since your birth date. For months, count whole months from your last birthday. For days, count what is left over. Some months are shorter than your birth day. Think of a January 31 birthday in February. In that case we use the last day of the month.

Worked example: born June 15, 1990, age on October 2, 2026

  1. Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36. June 15, 2026 has already passed. So the age is 36 years.
  2. Months: June 15 to September 15, 2026 is 3 full months. October 15 hasn't arrived.
  3. Days: September 15 to October 2 is 17 days.
  4. Result: 36 years, 3 months, 17 days. That is 13,258 days in total. Stop on that number for a second.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate age from a date of birth?

Subtract the birth year from the current year. If the birthday hasn't happened yet this year, subtract one more. For months and days, count full months since the last birthday. Then count the days left over.

How is age counted for someone born on February 29?

In common years this calculator treats March 1 as the birthday. So the age goes up on March 1. Legal rules vary by state and by purpose, like driver's licenses. When it matters, check with the agency involved.

Does the time of day I was born matter?

Not for legal age in the U.S. Legal age is counted in whole days. The calculator counts calendar days too. So your age changes at the start of your birthday.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes. Change the second date to any day. Use it to check age at a deadline. Turning 26 matters for health insurance on a parent's plan. Turning 65 matters for Medicare.
