How it works

Calendar days count forward on the calendar. They roll over month ends and year ends. Business days step forward one day at a time. They only count Monday–Friday days that are not an observed federal holiday. The start date itself is never counted. Put another way, day 1 is the day after you start.

Worked example: from January 1, 2026

  1. 30 days: January has 31 days, so January 1 + 30 = Saturday, January 31, 2026.
  2. 90 days: 30 days left in January + 28 in February + 31 in March = 89, so day 90 is Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
  3. 30 business days: skip weekends and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19). That gives Friday, February 13, 2026. It is 43 calendar days later. Not 30.

Frequently asked questions

Is the start date counted when adding days?

No. Adding 1 day to Monday gives Tuesday. Most contracts and invoices count "within N days" the same way.

Which holidays are skipped in business-day mode?

The 11 U.S. federal holidays, on their observed dates. Saturday holidays move to Friday. Sunday holidays move to Monday. That follows the Office of Personnel Management.

What date is 90 days from today?

See the "Dates from today" table above. It updates from your device's date. You can also type 90 into the calculator with today's date.

Can I subtract days to find a past date?

Yes. Choose Subtract and enter the number of days. Use it to find the date 180 days before a deadline, for example.
