How the countdown is calculated
The number of days until a date is that date minus today, in whole calendar days. Today comes from your device. So the number changes at your local midnight. Business days leave out Saturdays and Sundays. They also leave out the observed U.S. federal holidays published by the Office of Personnel Management.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the countdown differ from another site by one day?
Some sites count the target day itself. Others count from the current hour. We count whole days from today to the target date. Today is not included.
Why does Tax Day sometimes land on April 17 or 18?
April 15 sometimes falls on a weekend or on Emancipation Day (April 16, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C.). Then the deadline moves to the next business day under 26 U.S.C. 7503. That happened in 2017 and 2022. It will happen again in 2028.
