How the date of Tax Day is set

Rule: April 15, moved to the next business day if it falls on a weekend or a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. The rule depends on the calendar, so the date moves from year to year. Over the coming decades it runs from April 15 to April 18. The gap between Tax Day 2026 and 2027 is 365 days.

How the countdown is calculated

We subtract today's date from the date of Tax Day. We count midnight to midnight. Here is the same math by hand, from Saturday, October 3, 2026 to Thursday, April 15, 2027.

1. Rest of October after the 3rd: 28 days
2. Full months: November 2026 through March 2027: 151 days
3. April 1 through 15: 15 days
4. Total: 28 + 151 + 15 = 194 days (27 weeks and 5 days), of which 131 are business days.

Business days leave out Saturdays, Sundays and observed U.S. federal holidays. So 63 of those 194 days are not business days. Your bank or employer may close on other days too.

History and traditions

Individual federal income tax returns are due April 15. Internal Revenue Code section 7503 adds a rule. When the deadline lands on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day (April 16) is a legal holiday in Washington, D.C. It can push the deadline too.

An extension (Form 4868) gives you more time to file. It does not give you more time to pay. That's not a small detail. Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas sometimes get later deadlines. Check IRS announcements for your state.
